Adele Ordered to Remove ‘Million Years Ago’ from Global Platforms in Copyright Case

A Brazilian court has ruled against Adele, ordering her 2015 song “Million Years Ago” to be removed from all radio and global streaming platforms due to alleged copyright infringement.

The judgment was handed down by Judge Victor Torres after Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes accused Adele of copying elements from his 1995 album. Specifically, Geraes claims that Adele’s song bears striking similarities to his 1996 classic “Mulheres,” popularized by Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila.

Geraes is demanding $160,000 in moral damages for lost royalties and is also seeking songwriting credit for Adele’s track. To enforce the ruling, the court has threatened Sony and Universal’s Brazilian subsidiaries with fines of $8,000 for any acts of non-compliance.

This legal battle highlights the ongoing complexity of intellectual property disputes in the global music industry, with artists and composers fighting for recognition and compensation.
