Nollywood actress and former Big Brother Naija star, Bamike Olawunmi Adenibuyan (Bambam),has opened up about her life-threatening childbirth experience.
Speaking in a recent episode of Me and My Girls on Fortitude, Bambam shed light on the dangers of postpartum complications and medical negligence, revealing how she narrowly escaped death.
“My Kidney Failed, My Heart Became Weak”
The actress recounted that during labor, her kidney failed, her heart weakened, and her liver shut down. Additionally, her daughter had detached from the placenta, which meant she could have lost oxygen and been stillborn if they had arrived at the hospital even a minute later.
“If I was a second late, she would have lost oxygen, and I would have had a stillbirth,” Bambam revealed.
She expressed deep gratitude for the medical team that saved her life and that of her baby, but the trauma left her with emotional scars.
Postpartum Struggles & Therapy
Despite surviving, Bambam admitted that the “what ifs” haunted her for a long time, leading her to seek therapy to cope with the trauma.
“Every time I look at her, I just say ‘what if.’ That word tormented me—what if the doctor wasn’t attentive? What if the nurse didn’t do her due diligence? It haunted me for a while, and I had to get therapy to walk me through being grateful.”
She also noted how much her body changed after childbirth, something she never imagined happening to her.
Medical Negligence in Maternal Health
Bambam’s revelation brings to light the growing concerns about postpartum care and medical negligence in Nigeria and beyond. Many women suffer severe complications during childbirth, with some cases leading to fatal outcomes due to delayed or inadequate medical intervention.
As more women share their experiences, the conversation around better maternal healthcare policies, improved hospital care, and postpartum mental health support continues to gain traction.
A Story of Survival and Gratitude
Bambam’s story is a powerful testimony of survival and resilience. As she continues to raise awareness about maternal health issues, her experience serves as a reminder of the challenges many women face and the importance of proper medical care during childbirth.
