Mohbad’s Death: Nurse Details Final Moments in Emotional Testimony

An auxiliary nurseFeyisayo Ogedengbe, has testified before the coroner’s inquest investigating the death of Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

During the court session at the Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, on Saturday, Ogedengbe recounted her interactions with the late singer, the medical treatment she administered, and the chaotic efforts to save his life.

How It All Started

Ogedengbe revealed that on September 11, 2023, she was contacted by Ayobami Sodiq, a.k.a. ‘Spending’, to administer a tetanus injection to a friend who had suffered an injury to his hand.

Due to heavy traffic, she couldn’t make it that day but arrived at the location on September 12 at around 2:30 p.m., only to discover that the patient was Mohbad.

Medications Administered

According to Ogedengbe, she met Mohbad, his wife, and his friend, Ayobami, in a room at Orchid Estate, Lekki.

She noticed swelling on the lower part of Mohbad’s right hand and proceeded to administer the following injections:

Tetanus injection (intramuscular route on his upper arm)

Paracetamol injection (4ml of paracetamol + 1ml of water, intravenously, for pain relief)

Ceftriaxone injection (a 10ml antibiotic, given slowly to treat infection)

She noted that before administering the injections, she asked if Mohbad had an ulcer, and since he said yes, she avoided giving him a diclofenac injection.

Sudden Allergic Reaction

While receiving the ceftriaxone injection, Mohbad suddenly said he felt like vomiting.

• He rushed to the toilet, vomited, then returned and sat on the floor.

• Ogedengbe noticed goosebumps all over his body, which she pointed out to his wife.

• His wife reportedly said this was his normal reaction to injections and suggested pouring water on him.

She and Ayobami rushed to get hydrocortisone and saline infusion from a nearby pharmacy, but it took time due to heavy traffic and unavailability of the drugs at the first pharmacy.

Panic and Attempts to Save Mohbad

By the time they secured the medication and returned, Mohbad had been carried outside the housedue to his deteriorating condition.

• There was no available vehicle, so a neighbor’s car was used.

• Due to severe trafficMohbad was transferred onto a motorcycle to reach the hospital faster.

• Ogedengbe ran behind the bike to keep up with them.

Hospital’s Response

At the first hospital, medical personnel were reluctant to attend to him but later performed CPR. However, the doctor declared him brought in dead (BID).

• The doctor asked Ogedengbe about the medications she administered, which she explained.

Darosha and Spending (friends of Mohbad) arrived and, refusing to accept his death, insisted on taking him to another hospital.

At the second hospital in Osapa London, Lekki, the medical team refused to admit Mohbad but checked his pulse and confirmed he had no signs of life.

Police Report and Legal Proceedings

• That evening, Ogedengbe, Mohbad’s lawyer, Ayobami, and her cousin (a lawyer)went to the Orchid Police Station to report the case.

• The police asked Mohbad’s lawyer and Ayobami if they wanted to file a complaint or request an investigation, but they were unsure.

• They were then referred to Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, for a police report and death certificate.

Cross-Examination and Next Hearing

Ogedengbe was cross-examined by:

Wahab Shittu (SAN) – Counsel for Mohbad’s family

Kabir Akingbolu – Counsel for Mohbad’s wife

State government representatives

The coroner adjourned the case to March 21, 2025, for further proceedings.

Unanswered Questions

The testimony has left several unanswered questions, including:

• Did medical negligence contribute to Mohbad’s death?

• Why did both hospitals delay treatment or refuse admission?

• Could earlier intervention have saved him?
