Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has come under fire from fashion critic T20luxry after sharing a video promoting a fashion store that has been accused of selling counterfeit designer goods.
The controversy began when Abraham, who recently attended Iyabo Ojo’s daughter’s wedding in Tanzania, posted a clip endorsing the store. T20luxry pointed out a Birkin bag featured in the video, alleging that it was a fake and criticizing Abraham for supporting imitation luxury items.
The backlash intensified when critics resurfaced an old post where the actress spoke out against movie piracy and its negative effects on the film industry. Many called out what they saw as hypocrisy, arguing that promoting counterfeit fashion contradicts her stance on piracy.
Toyin Abraham is not the first celebrity to face such accusations. Others, including Iyabo Ojo, food critic Opeyemi Famakin, and businessman E-Money, have previously been called out for allegedly using fake designer products.
Reactions from Fans and Critics
The incident has sparked debate online, with some mocking the situation and others questioning why Nigerian celebrities feel the need to flaunt high-end brands.
@tiwa.22 wrote:
“Why can’t they just stick to brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Zara, Michael Kors, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Dune, and Tory Burch? These are still luxury but more affordable. Why force Hermes, LV, Gucci?”
@marvinboy101 defended the actress, saying:
“Where do you expect her to find $50,000 to buy a real Birkin bag? Not everyone has that kind of money. Even Wizkid allegedly bought a fake Richard Mille for his manager in 2019. Let them wear what they can afford!”
@fisayosapphire criticized her, stating:
“Then she has no business complaining about piracy.”
Despite the criticism, Toyin Abraham has yet to respond to the allegations.
