Super Eagles Captain Troost-Ekong and Coach Eric Chelle Share Optimism Ahead of Rwanda Clash

As the Super Eagles of Nigeria prepare to face Rwanda in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier, both team captain William Troost-Ekong and newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle have expressed their confidence and determination to turn the team’s fortunes around.

The Nigerian squad, who were crowned Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions in 2013, currently find themselves in a challenging position, with just three points from five games in the qualifying campaign. Today’s match against the Wasps of Rwanda in Kigali is a pivotal opportunity to reignite their World Cup hopes.

Troost-Ekong: “Pressure is a Privilege”

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, William Troost-Ekong acknowledged the pressure on the team but embraced it as a driving force.

“Everything has been good. All the boys are fired up. Of course, we know we have a big job ahead. It comes with pressure, but I keep saying to everyone that pressure is a privilege,” said Ekong.

The captain, who played a crucial role in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 AFCON final, also emphasized the positive atmosphere within the squad. He expressed the team’s determination to work closely with Eric Chelle and adapt to the new tactical approach introduced by the coach.

“All the boys are feeling that energy, and we are ready to work with the new coach. He has given us a lot of new instructions, and now it’s about understanding what he wants from us on the field,” Ekong added.

Furthermore, the 2019 AFCON bronze medalist highlighted the honor of representing Nigeria, stressing the importance of unity and commitment in restoring the nation’s football pride.

“It’s always special to wear this badge. Being here and fighting for the country is an honor, and we will give everything we have on the pitch.”

Coach Eric Chelle Focused on First Win

On the sidelines, Eric Chelle is set to make his debut as head coach of the Super Eagles, stepping in after the departure of Finidi George. The Franco-Malian tactician acknowledged the challenge ahead but remains optimistic about the team’s prospects.

“They have a new coach, and they want to win, but we also want to win. We are ready,” Chelle asserted.

Chelle’s primary focus is on securing victory against Rwanda before shifting attention to future matches. He emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and concentration.

“I just want to be with my players, ensuring they stay focused on this game. Every game matters, but right now, it’s all about Rwanda. After that, we will think about the next challenges.”

The coach has spent the past days closely working with the squad, holding tactical sessions and team meetings to communicate his vision.

“We’ve had intensive training and meetings. I’ve shared my plans, how we aim to achieve success, and what I expect from every player. It’s now about executing those ideas on the pitch,” Chelle explained.

“The country needs this win, and the players are determined to make Nigerians proud.”
