Nigeria’s World Cup aspirations took a hit as Zimbabwe held the Super Eagles to a disappointing 1-1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Nigeria was unable to break the deadlock in the first half, largely due to an impressive performance by Zimbabwe’s goalkeeper, Washington Arubi.
Arubi Stands Tall Against Nigeria
The match opened with Victor Osimhen spearheading Nigeria’s attack. The Napoli striker found himself with two early opportunities, but Arubi’s quick reflexes denied him both times.
Further efforts from Samuel Chukwueze and Osayi-Samuel also came close, but the Zimbabwean goalkeeper remained resolute. As the half progressed, Zimbabwe managed to create a couple of counterattacks, forcing Nigeria’s goalkeeper Nwabali into action.
Second-Half Drama Unfolds
Looking to shake things up, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle introduced Tolu Arokodare in the second half. The substitution proved effective, with Arokodare’s physical presence and clever hold-up play adding a new dynamic to Nigeria’s attack.
In the 73rd minute, Arokodare controlled the ball brilliantly before finding Ola Aina on the left flank. Aina delivered a pinpoint low cross, which Osimhen slotted home, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Zimbabwe’s Late Equalizer
However, Nigeria’s joy was short-lived. In a lapse of concentration, Zimbabwe capitalized on a defensive error. Chirewa found space and delivered a low shot past Nwabali to level the score.
The late equalizer left Nigeria frustrated and stalled their hopes of securing a crucial victory.
Group C Standings and Path Forward
With the draw, Nigeria now sits third in Group C with 7 points from six games, trailing South Africa who defeated Benin Republic 2-0 to maintain their lead. Zimbabwe, despite their resilient performance, remains bottom of the group with 4 points.
Elsewhere in the group, Rwanda and Lesotho played out a 1-1 draw, further tightening the competition.
With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, Nigeria will need to regroup and deliver stronger performances in the remaining fixtures if they are to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
