Next Battlefield Game Will Bring Back Class System, With New Customization Options, DICE Confirms

16 July 2025

The iconic Class System is officially returning to the Battlefield franchise. Developer DICE has confirmed that the next installment in the long-running shooter series will feature a refreshed take on the classic class-based format — blending traditional roles with more modern customization mechanics.

What’s New in the Class System?

The update comes from Battlefield Labs, DICE’s ongoing test initiative for the next-gen shooter. In two detailed updates published on the official site, DICE laid out the new structure and philosophy behind the system.

Players will still choose from familiar archetypes like:

Assault

Recon

Support

Engineer (expected but not explicitly confirmed)

But this time, each role will be split into two core layers:

1. Class-Defining Components

These include signature weapons, traits, and gadgets that emphasize the identity and expectations of each class. Think of them as plug-and-play kits for quick pick-up action.

2. Customizable Components

Players can now fine-tune loadouts, training trees, throwable items, and gadgets. This allows for personal playstyles within each class without breaking their core function.

“The customizable components empower players to explore and push the boundaries of their roles … while still adhering to the expectations of the class,” DICE stated.

Fan Feedback and Evolution

DICE acknowledged the mixed feedback around Battlefield 2042’s Specialists and has seemingly used that insight to find a middle ground.

For example:

Recon players still get sniper benefits and stealth traits.

• But they can also unlock varied weapons and gadgets through a three-tier training progression.

This hybrid model allows veterans to enjoy legacy playstyles while introducing enough flexibility to satisfy newer players or competitive-minded squads.

Development and Release Plans

While the game has no official title or release date yet, Electronic Arts has confirmed it will launch before the end of March 2026. It remains a large-scale, class-based shooter at its core.

The game is being co-developed by:

DICE (lead studio)

Ripple Effect Studios (formerly DICE LA)

Motive Studio

Criterion Games

More to Come

Battlefield Labs is currently conducting pre-alpha testing, with future updates to bring:

• Client-side builds

• Server-side balancing

• Community-driven feedback integration

So far, fans are cautiously optimistic that DICE is course-correcting, using the Class System as a way to anchor gameplay while still pushing innovation.

Expect more info, gameplay previews, and (hopefully) a full reveal in late 2025 or early 2026.

TL;DR:

Battlefield’s next title will feature a revamped Class System blending traditional roles with modern customization. DICE promises it will feel familiar, yet deeper — and it’ll launch before March 2026.
