Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi List UK Home After Just One Year to Make Room for Horses

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are parting ways with their UK countryside home barely a year after purchasing it — all in the name of making more room for their beloved animals.

The couple, who made the move to Britain in 2024, bought a 43-acre estate in the scenic Cotswolds for £20 million. But now, they’ve listed the property for sale at £22.5 million, citing the need for a larger space to accommodate Portia’s horses, which were flown in from the United States.

In a statement shared with The Wall Street Journal via Sotheby’s, Ellen explained the reason behind the quick move: “When we decided to live here full time, we knew that Portia couldn’t live without her horses. We needed a home that had a horse facility and pastures for them.”

The Oxfordshire property, which features six bedrooms, a guest house, a gym, swimming pool, and a “party barn” complete with a pub, underwent nearly five months of renovations before the couple moved in. However, they reportedly only spent around four weeks living there before relocating to a bigger home with better equestrian facilities.

Despite the short stay, Ellen has expressed her deep affection for life in the UK. During her In Conversation with Ellen DeGeneres event at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre on July 20, she shared her love for British charm and countryside living. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said. “The villages and the towns and the architecture – everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life. Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”

She added that relocating Portia’s horses was only the beginning of expanding their animal family: “Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”

Ellen and Portia may be saying goodbye to their Cotswolds estate, but it’s clear they’re settling deeper into British country life — one pasture at a time.
