Eddie Murphy has officially announced that his beloved Shrek character Donkey is getting a spin-off film — and it’s already in the works.
Speaking in a new interview with ScreenRant, the 64-year-old comedy legend revealed that production will begin September 2025, with the Donkey movie set to release in 2028.
“We start in September on Donkey,” Murphy said. “We’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll be three years from now… They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September.”
According to Murphy, the new film will center around Donkey’s own little adventure — complete with his dragon wife and their half-dragon, half-donkey children.
A Standalone Just Like Puss in Boots
Murphy confirmed the project is not a TV show but a full-length theatrical film, in the vein of the successful Puss in Boots spin-offs.
“Donkey’s going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Shrek 5 Is Still in the Works
While fans eagerly await Donkey’s solo outing, Murphy is still busy voicing the talkative sidekick in the long-anticipated Shrek 5, which is currently deep in voiceover production and scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
“We’re still doing Shrek,” Murphy shared. “We’re still in the booth… about two years into Shrek 5.”
The film will reunite the original core cast — Murphy, Mike Myers as Shrek, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona — and introduce new characters, including Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia.
“We Don’t See Each Other Until the Premiere”
Though fans may imagine the cast recording their lines together, Murphy clarified the voice work is done individually.
“It’s all just you by yourself and a microphone,” he said. “At the end of the movie or when the movie comes out, we see each other at the premiere.”
Murphy also promised that Shrek 5 will be packed with laughs.
“I’ve recorded some great stuff. I know I’ve been doing some really funny stuff.”
Between the return of Shrek and Donkey’s standalone debut, fans of the franchise are in for a double dose of fairytale fun. Get ready — the swamp isn’t going quiet anytime soon.
