Sabrina Carpenter Alice in Wonderland Musical Confirmed at Universal Pictures

Pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter is set to venture down the rabbit hole, signing on to both star in and produce a major musical film inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The untitled project is being developed by Universal Pictures and marks the 26-year-old artist’s first lead role in a major studio feature film, a significant move following a year of immense musical success, including six Grammy nominations.

This new take on the beloved story has attracted a formidable creative team. Carpenter will be working alongside veteran producer Marc Platt, known for his work on both the stage and screen adaptations of Wicked and La La Land. Critically acclaimed filmmaker Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers, Succession) is attached to write and direct the musical, signaling a potentially contemporary and nuanced adaptation of the Victorian-era fantasy.

Sources close to the deal indicate that the Sabrina Carpenter Alice in Wonderland Musical is a deep “passion project” for the singer. Carpenter reportedly approached the studio with the concept and a specific creative vision over a year ago. Her dual role as both lead actress and producer ensures her artistic vision will be central to the project, promising a fresh perspective on Alice’s journey through the whimsical and nonsensical world.

By combining her pop star power with the credibility of producers like Marc Platt and the unique voice of director Lorene Scafaria, the Sabrina Carpenter Alice in Wonderland Musical is poised to be one of Universal’s most highly anticipated musical releases. The news reaffirms Carpenter’s successful transition from music icon back to actress, securing her position as a major multi-hyphenate talent in Hollywood.
