‘Phoenix Fury’ Wins Best Film at 13th AFRIFF, Director Takes Best Director Award

The Nollywood film Phoenix Fury claimed the prestigious Best Film award at the 13th edition of the African Film Festival (AFRIFF), held on November 10, 2024, at the Oriental Hotel. Directed by Ifeoma Nkiruka Chukwuogo, Phoenix Fury also earned Chukwuogo the Best Director award at the festival, recognizing her outstanding vision and storytelling.

Phoenix Fury delivers a rich narrative that skillfully intertwines past and present. The story follows the character Ifeatu from birth through a series of misfortunes that drive her to seek revenge against Yali, a man who has drastically altered her life. The film, divided into four chapters, explores the journeys of two main characters from different periods, effortlessly transitioning between their worlds and examining themes of struggle, resilience, and revenge.

AFRIFF’s 13th edition celebrated remarkable talent and showcased powerful stories from African filmmakers, with Phoenix Fury standing out as one of the festival’s most compelling works.
