Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali will miss Nigeria’s final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Rwanda on Monday following the death of his father, Chief Godspower Onyekam Abali. The 27-year-old announced the heartbreaking news on Friday via social media, sharing the loss of his father, also known as Chief Onyeogazrim I of Okwuzi, who passed away at 67.
Team Administrator Dayo Enebi Achor confirmed that Nwabali has been excused from the game but added that the goalkeeper plans to attend the match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium to support his teammates from the sidelines.
With Nwabali unavailable, the race for the starting goalkeeper spot intensifies, with Maduka Okoye, who currently plays in Italy, and Ethiopia-based Amas Obasogie vying for the role in Monday’s crucial fixture.
The Super Eagles are expected to honor Nwabali’s father during the match as they push for a strong finish in the AFCON qualifying campaign. Fans and teammates have sent their condolences to the bereaved goalkeeper, offering support during this challenging time.
