Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has revealed he used a special bodysuit to achieve the muscular look of demigod Maui in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana. The 52-year-old actor, who previously voiced Maui in the 2016 animated film and its sequel, admitted the costume played a key role in transforming his physique for the role.
Speaking to Extra, Johnson explained,
That’s a suit that took a long time to put on. I’m so happy you said: ‘You bulked up,’ because that means you couldn’t tell I was wearing the suit.
In addition to enhancing his muscles, the bodysuit helped streamline production by eliminating hours in the makeup chair for Maui’s intricate tattoos. Johnson shared,
That is a couple of hours every day of transforming, putting that [the tattoos] on.
The project holds deep personal significance for Johnson, as it connects to his Samoan heritage. Reflecting on his experience, he said,
The moment I stepped on set as live-action Maui, I realised: ‘Oh, wow, this is different.’ It was almost like stepping into my grandfather’s skin.
The live-action Moana stars 17-year-old Samoan actress Catherine Laga‘aia as the titular heroine and features a cast rooted in Pacific Islander heritage, including Frankie Adams, John Tui, and Rena Owen. Directed by Thomas Kail with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the film celebrates Polynesian culture and the adventurous spirit of its protagonist.
Moana is set to hit theaters in 2026, promising a vibrant retelling of the beloved story that honors the traditions, communities, and islands of the Pacific.
