The movie is a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, itself based on Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom. In the original, a businessman is faced with an agonizing moral dilemma when a kidnapper mistakenly takes his chauffeur’s son instead of his own. Lee’s version flips the script, casting Washington as a powerful music mogul known for his impeccable instincts and industry dominance. This marks the fifth collaboration between Lee and Washington, a creative duo known for cinematic hits like Malcolm X and Inside Man.
