Nigerian highlife legend Bright Chimezie has inked a landmark deal with Sony Music Publishing, a major step toward preserving and promoting his iconic Zigima Sound on the world stage.
Known for his electrifying stage presence and his pioneering role in the evolution of highlife and Afrobeat, Chimezie’s music is both timeless and culturally rich. This new partnership hands Sony the rights to manage his entire music catalog — including classic hits that helped shape Nigeria’s music landscape.
“This partnership is about more than just music, it’s about heritage,” said Chimezie. “Zigima has always stood for unity and tradition, and I’m thrilled to partner with Sony Music Publishing to share our sound with the world.”
The Zigima Sound, a genre Chimezie created by blending highlife, traditional rhythms, and socially conscious lyrics, became a voice for the people and a soundtrack to everyday Nigerian life. Now, Sony plans to amplify that sound globally.
Godwin Tom, Managing Director of Sony Music Publishing Nigeria, praised Chimezie’s lasting influence:
“Bright Chimezie’s music has stood the test of time and continues to connect with audiences across generations. We’re proud to represent his legendary catalog and excited to open new doors that celebrate his contribution to African music.”
This deal is part of Sony’s broader mission to elevate African music legends and ensure their contributions are preserved, celebrated, and monetized on a global scale.
With this move, Chimezie joins a growing list of Nigerian music icons receiving overdue recognition and support in an era where African sounds are captivating global audiences more than ever.
