Nigerian singer Charles Chibuezechukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has opened up about his harrowing experience with drug addiction and how it nearly cost him his life. The ‘Ngozi’ crooner shared his story in a recent interview with YouTuber Korty EO, revealing that he was hospitalized at a psychiatric facility after a mental health crisis.
Crayon recalled an incident outside his record label’s office where he lost control, leading to a concerning episode. “There was a day my manager saw me and was alarmed by my condition. He asked what was wrong with me, and I told him I only smoked weed. Then I started acting crazy,” he said.
During the episode, Crayon walked barefoot to the Mavin Records studio and collapsed in front of the gate, exhausted and disoriented. He described how his colleague and friend, Rema, came to his rescue, providing support and encouragement during the challenging time.
“I was lying down on Rema’s lap. He was like, ‘Bro, trust me, once you pass this stage, you will come out great because I feel like this is the final battle you’re about to fight.’ That word stuck with me,” Crayon recalled. He expressed his gratitude that no one recorded him during the episode, as it could have severely impacted his career and confidence.
The situation escalated to the point where Crayon was taken to a psychiatric hospital in Lekki for treatment. Reflecting on the ordeal, he drew parallels to the struggles faced by late Nigerian singer Mohbad, saying, “It was that crazy.”
Despite the challenges, Crayon eventually recovered and returned to the care of his record label boss, Don Jazzy, grateful for the support he received during his darkest moments.
