Discovering African Literary Treasures: Akada Children’s Book Festival 2023
Prepare to embark on a literary journey celebrating African authors, illustrators, and the rich tapestry of Nigerian cultures. The Akada Children’s Book Festival, affectionately known as ‘Akada,’ is set to ignite young minds with the magic of children’s literature. This captivating event will unfold at the Starfield Montessori School, Lekki, Lagos, on September 23, 2023.
Olubunmi Talabi, the Co-Founder of Akada CBF, unveiled the 2023 edition of this festival with boundless enthusiasm. She explained that ‘Akada’ aims to shine a spotlight on a diverse array of authors and illustrators, each weaving their unique tales of Africa under the theme, ‘Through the Pages.’
Talabi emphasized that this festival provides a captivating gateway for children to explore the richness of various cultures and immerse themselves in the enchanting world of books. She expressed, “The festival provides a platform for literary professionals such as writers, illustrators, and publishers of children’s books to showcase their work and helps book lovers, child development enthusiasts, and literary creatives to connect with like minds. The ACBF excels at hosting engaging activities in which families can participate together, as well as providing an avenue for parents, children, and teachers to discover new books.”
Furthermore, the Akada Children’s Book Festival champions the culture of reading for pleasure from an early age and seeks to enhance access to age-appropriate, non-academic books.
Renowned author and TV host, Noma Sodipo, underscored the festival’s critical role in early childhood education. She highlighted the tactile experience of holding and engaging with books as a vital skill for children during their formative years. Sodipo also questioned the continued reliance on foreign curricula and stressed the importance of embracing and celebrating indigenous stories.
Adding to the chorus of voices supporting this literary celebration, Dara Oluwatoye, a broadcaster and host of the 2023 festival, emphasized the profound impact of exposing children to books and stories that resonate with their own lives. When young readers encounter stories that reflect their realities, they become more deeply engaged in the world of literature.
So, mark your calendars for the Akada Children’s Book Festival 2023, where the pages come alive with the wonders of African storytelling and the joy of reading.
