First Reactions to Paddington in Peru: Does the Third Film Keep the Magic Alive?

After seven long years since Paddington 2 charmed audiences, Paddington in Peru is finally hitting UK cinemas this week. The beloved bear and the Brown family head to Peru to visit Aunt Lucy, only to discover she’s mysteriously missing, leading them on an exciting new adventure. Following its London premiere, critics and fans alike have shared their initial impressions, and here’s what they have to say.

So, does the third film live up to its predecessors?

First Reactions and Standout Performances

Digital Spy’s Ian Sandwell praised the film’s trademark blend of “inventive visuals, silly gags, and a big heart.” He notes Olivia Colman’s excellent performance, while Antonio Banderas, in particular, is a standout, bringing a fresh comedic spark.

Emily Murray from Total Film acknowledged the film as a “step down from the previous movies,” yet still a delightful watch. She highlighted Colman’s “sensational” role as a singing nun and called Banderas the “hilarious stand-out.”

Nicola Austin also shared that while Paddington in Peru may lack some of the “charm and magic” of the second film, it offers “bags of heartwarming moments & adventure.” She loved Colman’s “wacky” song, which she said channels Julie Andrews.

Phil Roberts described Paddington in Peru as “a wonderfully fun adventure,” commending Dougal Wilson’s direction and the “picturesque” cinematography. Aaron Onaza agreed, celebrating it as “just as delightful as the first two films” and filled with the “heart and humour” that audiences have come to expect.

Changes Behind and In Front of the Camera

This time around, Dougal Wilson directed Paddington in Peru, taking over from Paul King. Additionally, Emily Mortimer replaced Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Brown, who opted not to return. Mortimer shared that stepping into the role was both “flattering” and “nerve-racking.”

When You Can Watch

Paddington in Peru arrives in UK cinemas on November 8 and will debut in the US on January 17, 2025. And if you’re in need of a refresher, both Paddington and Paddington 2 are available to stream on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.

This latest installment seems set to offer fans another heartwarming adventure with a fresh, new twist—even if the third movie doesn’t entirely replicate the magic of Paddington 2.
