Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) were dashed after a 3-1 loss to Nigeria in Uyo during the second leg of the qualifiers. Following a goalless draw in the first leg at Accra Sports Stadium, the Black Galaxies struggled to keep up with Nigeria’s dominance.
The Eagles B, led by a spirited performance, stunned Ghana with three rapid goals in the 19th, 22nd, and 25th minutes. Ghana’s lone moment of consolation came in the 73rd minute when Berekum Chelsea forward Stephen Amankona found the back of the net.
Black Galaxies head coach Mas-ud Dramani didn’t hold back in praising the Nigerian team. Speaking to Premium Times, Dramani said, “They were full of running and played their hearts out. Congratulations to Nigeria because they deserved their victory. They were the better team.”
Ghana had aimed to secure a second consecutive CHAN qualification after making it to the quarterfinals in 2022. However, the loss in Uyo marked the end of their journey, leaving fans and players alike to reflect on the missed opportunity.
Meanwhile, Nigeria advances to the 2024 CHAN tournament set to be hosted across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, with hopes of making a strong impact on the continental stage.
