Gospel Artist Sinach Faces N5 Billion Lawsuit Over ‘Way Maker’ Copyright Dispute

The Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned a N5 billion copyright infringement lawsuit against renowned gospel artist Sinach, filed by music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye. The case will resume in January 2025.

Maye, who claims he contributed significantly to Sinach’s 2016 global hit Way Maker, is seeking recognition as an author and co-owner of the musical composition. Filed under suit number FHC/L/CS/402/2024, the lawsuit demands N5 billion in general damages for alleged rights violations.

The producer argues that his role as the studio engineer—responsible for recording, mixing, and mastering the song—entitles him to co-ownership and a share of all fees generated from copyright licenses and assignments. Maye’s attorney, Justin Ige, emphasized that Sinach failed to formalize an agreement acknowledging his contributions, violating his performer’s rights.

The lawsuit seeks several remedies, including:

• Equal or court-determined equitable division of revenue from Way Maker.

• Disclosure of all copyright licenses and assignments related to the song.

• An account of accrued fees and payment of the plaintiff’s rightful share.

• A perpetual injunction preventing further use, reproduction, or distribution of Way Makerwithout Maye’s consent.

Sinach’s legal team has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations. Way Maker remains one of her most iconic songs, widely celebrated across global Christian communities.
