I Am Legend 2 Update: Will Smith & Michael B. Jordan Confirmed; Sequel Follows Alternate Ending

The highly anticipated sequel, I Am Legend 2, is officially moving forward in development, promising an exciting collaboration between two Hollywood heavyweights. Will Smith is confirmed to reprise his iconic role as Dr. Robert Neville, and he will be joined by megastar and producer Michael B. Jordan. The film’s greenlight comes years after the original 2007 post-apocalyptic blockbuster.

To make Smith’s return possible, the sequel will boldly ignore the theatrical ending of the first film, where Neville sacrifices himself. Instead, I Am Legend 2 will be based on the alternate ending where Neville survives the attack on his lab and leaves the desolate streets of New York. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman confirmed the new story will take place “a few decades later” in the ravaged world.

The sequel marks the first time Smith and Jordan will share the screen, creating a powerful dynamic between the two generations of cinema stars. Smith revealed that Jordan’s new character is set to be the “head of a settlement in Connecticut,” suggesting a shift away from Neville’s isolation toward exploring the fractured new communities that have survived the collapse.

While an official release date has not yet been set as the script is finalized, the momentum behind the project is strong. With the creative decision to leverage the alternate ending and bring in a major force like Michael B. Jordan, I Am Legend 2 is aiming to deliver a fresh and exciting expansion of the terrifying and fascinating universe established in the first film.
