“I Was Ready to Walk Away” – Mark Hamill Reveals He Nearly Quit Acting Before The Long Walk

Mark Hamill, the legendary actor behind Star Wars’ Luke Skywalker, has revealed he almost retired from acting in 2019—until his wife and agent stepped in to change his mind.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, the now 73-year-old screen icon shared that he had lost his drive for live-action roles and was seriously considering a quiet retirement focused solely on voiceover work.

“I thought at this stage in my life, I’d be spending more time with a metal detector, wandering the beach, playing with the dogs in the backyard,” he told Variety.

“I told my agent, ‘I’m not motivated anymore. I think I’ll just retire and stick to voiceovers.’ The only ones who pushed back were my agent and my wife—probably because they didn’t want me home all the time!”

Thankfully, their push worked. Hamill went on to join the cast of The Long Walk, an upcoming dystopian horror thriller based on the Stephen King novel. The film, directed by Francis Lawrence and written by JT Mollner, is expected to be one of the most anticipated genre releases of 2026.

For fans, it’s a relief to know that the beloved actor didn’t hang up his boots—because whether it’s in galaxies far, far away or dark dystopian futures, Mark Hamill still has stories to tell.
