Nollywood icon Iyabo Ojo has built an impressive career that spans over two decades, but beyond the glitz of the screen, she remains deeply rooted in family, resilience, and self-growth. In an exclusive chat with Pulse, the actress opened up about her life’s journey, the joys of motherhood, and the upcoming release of her most ambitious project yet — ‘Labake Olododo.’
A Heart Full of Gratitude
Sitting comfortably in her home, Iyabo Ojo radiates warmth. She expresses genuine gratitude for her current phase in life, acknowledging the challenges that have shaped her.
“I feel blessed,” she says with a smile. “It’s God’s doing, and I’m grateful.”
Her rise in the Nigerian film industry started in 1998 with the movie ‘Satan.’ Back then, Nollywood was still finding its footing, and so was Iyabo. As she navigated an industry filled with uncertainties, she relied on perseverance and self-accountability.
“A lot of things happened suddenly in my life,” she recalls. “I just kept correcting every mistake and never blamed anyone. I took responsibility and moved forward.”
Pride in Motherhood and Impact
For Iyabo, success is not merely a measure of financial wealth. Her true pride comes from raising her children with love and discipline, caring for her parents until their final days, and positively impacting her community.
“Money in your bank account isn’t the ultimate achievement. Real success is when you touch lives and change things in your society. That’s my greatest wealth,” she affirms.
Her devotion to her children is evident. She beams as she discusses her daughter’s upcoming wedding, effortlessly juggling her roles as a mother, businesswoman, and filmmaker.
Labake Olododo — A Story of Power and Vulnerability
Iyabo’s upcoming epic film, ‘Labake Olododo’, stands as a testament to her artistic evolution. The movie tells the story of Labake, a formidable female warrior, but it’s not just a tale of strength — it’s one of vulnerability, revenge, and redemption.
“I’ve carried this story in my head for almost nine years. Labake is strong-willed, just like me. But I also wanted to explore the dangers of bitterness and the weight of unresolved pain,” she explains.
The film’s production wasn’t without its challenges. The soaring cost of filmmaking was daunting, but Iyabo attributes her success to the support of those who believe in her.
“I think I’m blessed to have people who show up for me, probably because I also show up for people,”she says, reflecting on the power of community.
Breaking Boundaries
‘Labake Olododo’ also sees Iyabo pushing creative boundaries. A particular scene from the trailer has sparked conversations — one in which she appears bare, stripped of all pretense. But the actress isn’t bothered by the chatter.
“I can’t say too much; you’ll have to watch the movie,” she teases, her eyes twinkling.
Beyond the physicality of the role, she hopes the film ignites deeper conversations about emotional healing and personal growth.
“We have so much culture and tradition in our films, but I also love breaking rules in a positive way,”she adds.
A Legacy of Strength and Storytelling
As the conversation draws to a close, it’s clear that Iyabo Ojo is more than just a celebrated actress. She is a storyteller, a nurturer, and a force of nature — much like Labake herself.
“I classify myself as a warrior. Life hasn’t been easy, but I’m still standing. And now, I get to share that spirit with the world through ‘Labake Olododo.’”
With her signature resilience and boundless passion, Iyabo Ojo is set to leave an indelible mark on Nollywood — one powerful story at a time.
