Javier Mascherano, a former teammate of Lionel Messi at Barcelona and with Argentina, is reportedly set to become the new head coach of Inter Miami, replacing Gerardo “Tata” Martino.
According to ESPN, Mascherano will step down as manager of Argentina’s youth team to take up the role at Inter Miami. The coaching vacancy arose after Martino announced his departure for personal reasons, ending his tenure of a year and a half.
Inter Miami’s co-owner Jorge Mas confirmed that the search for a new coach began immediately after Martino’s exit on November 16. Mas noted:
“Our coaching search started at 11:01 a.m. the same day we were informed. By Tuesday, we had narrowed it down to three final candidates and made our decision two days ago.”
The official announcement of the new head coach is expected in the coming days.
Mascherano enjoyed a highly successful spell with Messi during their time together at Barcelona, where they won numerous titles, including La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup. His arrival at Inter Miami would reunite him with Messi, who has been instrumental in the club’s recent successes, including their Leagues Cup triumph.
Fans are eager to see how this iconic partnership will translate into the next chapter of Inter Miami’s journey.
