Sony Pictures has acquired the screen rights to LABUBU, the mischievous, elf-like monster collectible, confirming that a LABUBU Movie Sony deal is officially in the works. The viral toy, sold in “blind boxes” by Chinese giant Pop Mart, exploded in global popularity this year after being seen with celebrities like K-pop star Lisa and Rihanna.
The project is currently in early development, with no director or cast attached yet. Sony has not confirmed whether the film will be live-action, animated, or a hybrid. The studio is looking to capitalize on the toy-to-film success seen by Barbie and The LEGO Movie to launch a new cinematic franchise based on the character.
LABUBU, created by artist Kasing Lung, is the main figure in a group of creatures called “The Monsters,” which draws on Nordic folklore. Fellow characters like the leader Zimomo and boyfriend Tycoco are potential figures for the film’s cast, which will require an original narrative, as the toy’s lore is primarily defined by its artwork.
The deal for the LABUBU Movie Sony collaboration represents Hollywood’s latest move to adapt non-traditional intellectual property with an established global fanbase into a major studio tentpole.
