Lagos Becomes First African City to Host E1 Racing Championship

Lagos, Nigeria made history as the first African city to host the E1 Racing Championship, with electric powerboats blazing across Lagos Lagoon on October 4-5, 2025, in a spectacle of speed, technology, and eco-friendly design.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the historic event in July 2025, calling it a “major milestone” for both the sport and the city. The Lagos E1 Racing Championship positions Nigeria’s commercial hub alongside global destinations like Monaco and Venice in hosting the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series.

The two-day event featured Free Practice, Qualifying sessions, and high-stakes Race Day drama, with Fan Villages and VIP Club Paddocks offering spectators immersive experiences. Teams competing in the E1 series have celebrity backers, including Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba, who joined Governor Sanwo-Olu to unveil Lagos as the host city.

The championship represents a significant step for African sports tourism and sustainable technology showcasing. The Lagos event demonstrates the continent’s growing role in hosting world-class sporting events while promoting environmental innovation through electric-powered racing on the iconic Lagos Lagoon waters.
