Lewis Capaldi Gets Candid: “I Will Always Be an Anxious Person”

Lewis Capaldi is opening up like never before — and it’s nothing short of inspiring.

The Scottish singer-songwriter, known for his raw vocals and emotional lyrics, recently got honest about his ongoing struggles with anxiety and mental health. Though he’s in a better place now, Lewis says he’s accepted that anxiety will always be part of his life.

“I’m Not on Antidepressants Anymore…”

Speaking during a recent livestream, the 28-year-old revealed that he’s no longer on antidepressants, specifically Sertraline, after a difficult withdrawal process.

“It was f***ing hard to get off it,” he admitted. “You could say I survived getting off Sertraline, but let’s not get into that. This is happy stuff.”

Capaldi, however, made it clear that despite the challenges, he’s now feeling “the best [he’s] felt in a long time.”

Therapy Changed Everything

A major part of Lewis’s progress? Therapy.

He credits it as a life-saving force that’s helped him manage not just his anxiety, but also return to the stage after a difficult battle with Tourette syndrome, which forced him to cut his 2023 Glastonbury set short.

“Therapy is the reason why I am able to be a musician again,” he said in a candid video chat with BetterHelp. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop going to therapy after the impact it’s had on my life over the past two years.”

Lewis added that the most important part of his healing has been accepting that anxiety will likely always be a part of him.

“I think I will always be an anxious person. Accepting that’s always going to be there for me is a big thing. It’s about how I respond to anxiety.”

Giving Back: Free Therapy for Fans

Capaldi is now using his platform to help others who may be struggling. In partnership with BetterHelp, he’s helping provide 734,000 hours of free online therapy to fans around the world.

“To have someone as globally recognised as Lewis Capaldi share so authentically… is incredibly powerful,” said Sara Brooks, Chief Growth Officer at BetterHelp. “We’re grateful to have Lewis speak up and use his platform to help break down the stigma of therapy.”

A Comeback Fueled by Courage

Lewis made an emotional return to the Glastonbury Pyramid Stage this year, two years after stepping away mid-performance due to his Tourette’s symptoms. Recalling his struggle, he told the crowd:

“I took three weeks off just to take a wee break from my head… I was scared, but you’ve really made me feel at ease.”

From anxiety and Tourette’s to finding peace through therapy, Lewis Capaldi’s journey is a powerful reminder that vulnerability is strength — and healing is possible, even when the battle is ongoing.
