Lil Wayne has addressed Kendrick Lamar’s shoutout to him in “Wacced Out Murals,” the opening track from Kendrick’s surprise album, GNX. The song directly references Wayne’s disappointment over not being selected to headline the Super Bowl LIX halftime show—a spotlight that instead went to Kendrick.
Set to take place on February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans—Wayne’s hometown—the Super Bowl halftime show became a contentious topic in September when Wayne publicly admitted feeling let down by the decision. “It hurt a whole lot,” he said at the time. “I wasn’t mentally prepared for a letdown like that.”
Kendrick, acknowledging the controversy, addressed it in his lyrics, rapping:
“Used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud/
Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.”
Despite the emotional nature of the lyric, Wayne took it all in stride. While he initially hadn’t heard the song, once it was brought to his attention, he interpreted it as a gesture of respect. “He’s a fan, like I’m a fan,” Wayne said in a recent interview, recognizing Kendrick’s achievements and hard work.
Wayne’s response highlights his grace and mutual admiration for Kendrick, even in the face of personal disappointment. As fans gear up for Kendrick’s highly anticipated halftime performance, the nod to Wayne serves as a reminder of the deep connections and layered dynamics within the hip-hop world.
