Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, has set social media buzzing after warning fans never to compare him to Afrobeats superstar Wizkid.
The “Ile Ijo” crooner took to his X (formerly Twitter) page to assert his uniqueness in the Nigerian music industry, emphasizing that he is in a league of his own.
He wrote:
“Don’t ever compare me to anyone in this industry again!! Especially Wiz!! I’m a different breed!!! GOD’s baby.”
Throwback Moment with Wizkid
Amid the heated discussions, May D recalled a past incident where Wizkid performed his song “Too Fine” (a collaboration with Kel) at an event while he was in the audience.
He shared:
“I remember when I went to an event and Wizkid was performing my song with Kel, ‘Too Fine,’ and I was in the crowd. I still love him till date, but never compare.”
Fans React
May D’s bold statement quickly divided opinions online. While some supported his claim, others argued that Wizkid’s achievements surpass his in the music industry.
May D first rose to fame after signing with Square Records (P-Square’s former label) in 2011, but his career took a hit after parting ways with the label in 2012.
His latest remarks have reignited conversations about his legacy and place among Afrobeats icons.
What do you think—does May D deserve to be placed on the same pedestal as Wizkid?
