In a dramatic turn at the Ikorodu Magistrate Court in Lagos State, Nigerian music star Naira Marleytestified virtually at the Coroner’s inquest investigating the tragic death of popular singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.
Record Deal Disputes and Allegations
Naira Marley, whose real name is Azeez Fashola, revealed that Mohbad was signed to his label, Marlian Records, with a contract to produce four albums. However, the artist’s output was hindered by ongoing disagreements with his manager, Opere Babatunde, leading to no albums being completed before Mohbad’s departure from the label.
While testifying, Marley firmly denied any involvement in Mohbad’s death, emphasizing that accusations of threats and harassment were unfounded. He pointed to a police investigation that cleared him of any wrongdoing.
The Viral Video and Apology
Addressing the viral video in which Mohbad publicly accused Marley and the Marlian Records crew of endangering his life, Marley stated that Mohbad and his family later apologized. He claimed the late singer’s allegations were made under the influence of drugs, dismissing the accusations as baseless.
Legal Disputes Over Royalties
Contradicting Marley’s testimony, Mohbad’s lawyer, Oluwasanmi Falade, testified that there was a clear legal dispute over unpaid royalties. Despite repeated letters to Marlian Records demanding payment, the label allegedly failed to respond. The matter is currently in litigation before the Federal High Court.
Sam Larry and the Attack Allegations
Falade also recounted how Mohbad was attacked at Lekki Beach by music promoter Sam Larry. Following the incident, the late artist reported the matter to the Force Headquarters, though attempts to arrest Larry were unsuccessful. In light of these accusations, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi has now summoned Sam Larry to testify at the next hearing scheduled for April 11.
Further Testimonies Expected
In addition to Sam Larry, the court is set to summon Mohbad’s driver, whose testimony could provide further insight into the events leading up to the singer’s death. The coroner has also ordered the pathologist responsible for conducting Mohbad’s autopsy to submit a comprehensive report of the findings.
Seeking the Truth
Outside the courtroom, Wahab Shittu (SAN), counsel representing Mohbad’s family, expressed cautious optimism. While no direct evidence currently links Naira Marley to Mohbad’s death, Shittu remains hopeful that the inquest will unravel the truth. He also pushed for testimonies from doctors at the two hospitals where Mohbad was treated, seeking a clearer picture of his final moments.
The next court session promises more revelations as the investigation into Mohbad’s untimely death continues.
