Naira Marley Urges Coroner to Investigate Mohbad’s Wife and Others Present Before Singer’s Death

Nigerian singer Naira Marley, whose real name is Abdulazeez Fashola, has requested that the court investigate Omowunmi, the wife of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, along with 14 others who were present at Mohbad’s house in the 48 to 72 hours leading up to his death.

Naira Marley’s lawyer, Olusola Okuwobi, released a statement on Sunday confirming the singer’s testimony during a virtual appearance before Ms. T.A. Shotobi of the Coroner Court in Ikorodu, Lagos. The singer asserted that he was out of the country when Mohbad died and denied any involvement in the tragic incident.

“Naira Marley testified before the court virtually, providing a clear account of his whereabouts and his relationship with Mohbad. He confirmed that there were no unresolved issues between them before Mohbad’s passing,” the statement read.

The singer urged the coroner to shift the focus of the investigation to those who were physically present in Mohbad’s home before his death, criticizing the reliance on suspects presented by the police and social media speculation.

Additionally, Naira Marley accused certain individuals of misleading the public by circulating an old video of Mohbad’s alleged assault, which the late singer had apologized for and moved on from. He emphasized that Mohbad had left his record label on amicable terms.

Call for Re-Investigation

Following Naira Marley’s testimony, a group known as The Concerned Nigeria Citizens in Diasporacalled for a re-investigation into Mohbad’s death. The group, led by spokesperson Victoria Janolewsky-Peters, appealed to the Nigerian police to thoroughly investigate individuals present at Mohbad’s residence, including his brother, Adura Aloba, and his wife, Omowunmi, who they claimed had given conflicting statements.

“We urge the authorities to conduct a transparent and fair investigation, ensuring justice for Mohbad,” the group said.

Background

Mohbad, a former signee of Marlian Music, passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. Before his death, he had publicly accused Naira Marley and his associate Sam Larry of orchestrating attacks against him. However, on February 25, 2025, a court ruling cleared both Naira Marley and Sam Larry of any involvement in Mohbad’s death.

As the investigation continues, the court is expected to weigh the testimonies and determine the next steps. Omowunmi’s lawyer, Taiwo Olawanle, has not yet responded to the recent developments.
