British supermodel Naomi Campbell has been banned from serving as a charity trustee in the UK for five years, following a watchdog investigation that uncovered misuse of funds.
The UK Charity Commission, responsible for regulating charities in England and Wales, revealed that only 8.5% of the charity’s total expenditure went towards charitable grants over a six-year period, from 2016 onwards. The remaining funds were allegedly used for luxury expenses, including spa treatments, hotel stays, and cigarettes, all linked to Campbell.
The three-year inquiry by the commission found that a significant portion of the charity’s funds was directed towards Campbell’s personal expenses at high-end hotels and spas. The investigation raised concerns about the governance and financial management of the charity.
In response to the findings, Campbell told AP: “I have just found out about the findings today. And I am extremely concerned. I wasn’t in control of my charity, I put the control in the hands of a legal employer.”
The watchdog’s decision to ban Campbell from holding a trustee position for five years highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in charitable organizations.
