Nigeria drops 8th FIBA rankings following the latest update released by the global governing body in September after D’Tigers dropped 11 spots from 42nd in March 2025 to 53rd position globally . The 2015 African champions slipped from sixth to eighth on the continental rankings, amassing 248.7 points compared to 297.8 they had as of March earlier in the year . Nigeria was among the biggest droppers alongside Morocco, Tunisia, Virgin Islands and Kosovo .

At the tournament proper, Nigeria’s run saw them top Group B with six points following victories against Madagascar, three-time champions Tunisia and Cameroon during the round-robin phase . Their campaign ended when they faced Senegal in the last eight, resulting in a 91-75 defeat.

D’Tigers bid to secure a place for the next edition of the competition set to be held in Qatar in 2027, having missed out on the 2023 edition . The last time Nigeria featured at the FIBA Men’s World Cup was during the 2019 edition held in China under former head coach Alex Nwora .
