In a surprising turn of events, Asisat Oshoala will not be defending her title as the CAF Women’s Player of the Year for the first time since 2015. The six-time winner failed to make the shortlist for the prestigious award in 2024.
However, Super Falcons stars Rasheedat Ajibade and Chiamaka Nnadozie have kept Nigeria’s flag flying high by securing spots among the 10 nominees. Joining them on the list are notable talents such as South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana, Zambia’s Barbara Banda and Racheal Kundananji, Malawi’s Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, Burundi’s Sandrine Niyonkuru, Morocco’s Sanaa Mssoudy, and South Africa’s Jermaine Seoposenwe.
Nnadozie, last year’s Goalkeeper of the Year, also earned a chance to defend her title, facing competition from Edo Queens’ Monle Oyono. Meanwhile, Nigerian teams made a strong showing in the national team category, with the Super Falcons, Falconets, and Flamingos all receiving nominations.
Emerging stars Flourish Sabastine and Chiamaka Okuchukwu are in the running for the Best Young Player award, while coaches Bankole Olowookere (Flamingos), Chris Danjuma (Falconets), and Moses Adukwu (Edo Queens) are nominated for Coach of the Year.
The 2024 CAF Awards will take place on December 16 in Marrakech, Morocco, celebrating the continent’s best football talents.
