Real Madrid defender Éder Militão is set to undergo surgery after sustaining a severe injury during the team’s 4-0 triumph over Osasuna, leaving fans and the club stunned. The 26-year-old Brazilian tore his ACL and also suffered meniscus damage in his right knee, an injury confirmed by the club in an official statement. Renowned sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Militão faces an estimated nine-month recovery period, meaning he will miss the remainder of the season.
Militão’s absence is a huge blow for Real Madrid, especially as he has been a defensive rock for the team this season, helping them secure six clean sheets in just 17 appearances. The injury, which occurred in the 30th minute, saw Militão stretchered off the field, with academy player Raúl Asencio stepping in. Despite the setback, Real Madrid maintained their momentum, sealing a dominant 4-0 win with a hat-trick from Vinicius Junior and a goal from Jude Bellingham.
In light of the news, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti voiced concerns over the intense football calendar, suggesting that the high demands on players may be contributing to such injuries. “The players arrive with less rest due to the demands of the calendar. It’s a general problem,” he remarked.
As Real Madrid’s injury list grows—now including Aurelien Tchouameni, Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, and Thibaut Courtois—Ancelotti hinted that new signings in January are unlikely. Instead, he plans to rely on the existing squad, emphasizing the importance of recovery: “The only thing we can do is recover as many players as possible. In January, we will see, but for now, we work with what we have.”
With upcoming matches against CD Leganés in La Liga and Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid faces a challenging period as they look to maintain their form with a depleted squad.
