Portugal Legend Rui Patrício Retires at 37

A legend of Portuguese football has hung up his gloves, as goalkeeper Rui Patrício Retires from professional football at the age of 37. The news was officially announced by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), celebrating his remarkable 19-year career. Patrício leaves the game having secured a place in the nation’s history as Portugal’s most capped goalkeeper of all time, with an impressive 108 international appearances.

Patrício’s legacy is most defined by his success with the national team. He was the vital last line of defense during Portugal’s triumph at UEFA Euro 2016, a tournament performance that earned him a spot on the Team of the Tournament. He also helped secure the 2019 UEFA Nations League title. His commitment spanned over a decade, participating in eight major international competitions.

At club level, Patrício spent the majority of his career as a stalwart for Sporting CP, making over 460 appearances and winning five major domestic titles. After leaving Portugal, he successfully transitioned to Wolverhampton Wanderers, before winning the inaugural UEFA Conference League with AS Roma in 2022. He concluded his career after a brief stint with Atalanta.

The FPF has announced plans for a formal farewell ceremony next Friday, December 12, to honor his contributions. The decision for Rui Patrício Retires comes after turning down other offers, cementing his choice to end his distinguished career having won major honors at both the club and international level.
