In a heartfelt moment during his concert at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Shawn Mendes addressed a deeply personal topic that has followed him since his teenage years in the spotlight: his sexuality. The 26-year-old singer took a pause between songs to share what he calls “the truth” about his journey in discovering who he is.
“Since I was really young, there’s been this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it for so long,” Mendes told the crowd. Starting his career at 15, Mendes explained how the constant speculation felt intrusive, especially about something as complex as sexuality. “It’s so hard to just put into boxes,” he said, reflecting on how his personal journey is still ongoing.
“The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone,” he shared. “Sometimes I don’t really know, and other times I do. It feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that.” Mendes noted that he’s speaking out now to feel more connected with his fans, saying, “I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to be a human and feel things.”
Mendes, who has previously dated Camila Cabello and Hailey Bieber, is set to release his new self-titled album on November 15. Fans are eagerly awaiting his new music, which may carry even deeper insights as Mendes embraces his vulnerability and authenticity.
