The upcoming DCU film, simply titled Supergirl (based on the original Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow Movie comic), is fully embracing the darker, more complex version of Kara Zor-El. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed the film will be a “hardcore” and “messy” adaptation, signaling a commitment to a story fundamentally different from previous sunny depictions of the hero.

Gunn stated that this Kara (Milly Alcock) is a much harsher figure because she watched everyone die during 14 years on a drifting piece of Krypton. This trauma leads to a plot focusing on vengeance, as Kara teams up with young Ruthye Marye Knolle to hunt Krem of the Yellow Hills. Set photos confirm the comic-accurate scene where Kara drinks at a red-sun bar to cope.
While largely comic-accurate, the film will make one key structural change: the inclusion of the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo (Jason Momoa). Lobo was cut from the original comic but brought back by Gunn to help adapt the story to a three-act structure, which highlights the film’s “cosmic western” tone.

The high fidelity to the source material, emphasizing a flawed, traumatized heroine, confirms the DCU’s focus on mature and distinct comic arcs. The anticipation is high for the Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow Movie to redefine the character and set a dark, edgy benchmark for the new cinematic universe when it arrives in 2026.
