‘The Herd’ Film Stereotyping Sparks Anger, Bashir Ahmad Cites Fulani Concerns

Former Special Assistant to ex-President Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has publicly criticized the Nollywood thriller “The Herd,” stating that its portrayal of Fulani herders is causing anger among Arewa viewers. Ahmad took to X on Saturday, November 22, 2025, to address the The Herd Film Stereotyping concerns.

Ahmad acknowledged that some bandits are Fulani, but emphasized that the overwhelming majority of herders are innocent victims of insecurity. He warned that the film’s teaser, which shows herders suddenly opening fire on travellers, creates a “facile as it is dangerously inaccurate” impression that could unjustly taint an entire ethnic group.

He urged filmmakers to conduct intensive fieldwork with security experts and pastoralist groups to capture the full complexity of Nigeria’s security crisis, rather than reinforce harmful stereotypes that can lead to stigma and harassment. He also suggested the Nigerian Film Corporation, led by Ali Nuhu, should have provided guidance to prevent such damaging portrayals.

The film, directed by Daniel Etim Effiong, explores insecurity and kidnapping, using the tragic backdrop of a wedding celebration.
