In a heartbreaking turn of events, former Ghanaian forward Raphael Dwamena, aged 28, met an untimely demise on the football field while playing for a local team in Albania. The Albanian Football Federation confirmed the tragic incident in a statement, revealing that Dwamena lost consciousness during the match, prompting immediate medical attention and his subsequent transfer to the hospital.
“Despite the immediate intervention of specialist doctors and all efforts to bring him back to life, the footballer unfortunately passed away,” lamented the federation.
This devastating turn of events has led to the postponement of all scheduled games in Albania this week as the football community mourns the loss of a talented player.
Dwamena had previously faced a heart condition diagnosis in 2017, and in 2021, during a game in Austria, he collapsed on the pitch but was successfully stabilized.
Ghana Football Association President Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku paid tribute to Dwamena, saying, “He served his country well and showed class anytime he represented Ghana.”
Having donned the Ghanaian jersey nine times and scoring two goals, Dwamena’s impact on the field and his contributions to the sport will be remembered with fondness by fans and the football community alike.
