Winona Ryder has always done things her own way — and that includes cutting her own hair. The Hollywood icon revealed she’s never relied on fancy salons for her signature short styles. Instead, she grabs the scissors and gets to work.
“Honestly, I always loved having short hair,” the Beetlejuice star told Ella magazine. “One thing is, I have to cut it myself… [I turn my head] upside down and you cut up.”
Known for her iconic pixie cuts since rising to fame in the 1980s, Winona, now 53, says her DIY approach has served her well over the years.
But hair isn’t the only thing she’s had to face head-on. Winona opened up about the pressures of ageing in Hollywood, admitting some directors have suggested she get Botox during filming.
“I always knew I looked young. But I also knew that when I started ageing, it was gonna happen fast,” she said. “They’ll say: ‘Just relax your forehead. Relax.’ I’m trying to be a great actor, and they’re saying that over and over. It’s nice that people are talking about how it’s OK to age, but there’s still enormous pressure.”
These days, Winona finds herself cast mostly in mother roles — a shift she acknowledges comes with the territory.
When it comes to fashion, she keeps it simple and sentimental. Her wardrobe essentials? “Socks and underwear, a comfortable pair of jeans, a favourite T-shirt, and a soft sweater,” she told Elle.com.
As for the return of 1990s style? She’s flattered, but distant. “It’s not my 90s style that’s been revived! I certainly don’t feel any ownership over it — that’s just way too much responsibility,” she said with a laugh.
The Stranger Things star also has a hard time parting with beloved clothing. In fact, she once framed an old Clash T-shirt she got at their 1980 concert because it was falling apart.
“I inherited my father’s ‘archivist’ gene, so it’s really hard for me to let go of things,” she admitted.
From cutting her own hair to archiving her rock tees, Winona Ryder continues to march to the beat of her own (very stylish) drum.
