Woody Allen Madrid Film Confirmed: Government Grants €1.5M with Title Stipulation

Veteran director Woody Allen has officially confirmed his next movie location, securing the necessary funding to shoot his 51st feature film entirely in Spain’s capital. The Madrid regional government announced today that it has approved a €1.5 million grant to support the production, continuing Allen’s strong connection with European filmmaking. The new project, currently titled WASP 2026 (Woody Allen Summer Project 2026), will begin production next year.

The funding comes with a unique, contractual stipulation that ensures the city benefits directly: the final title of the movie must include the word “Madrid.” This condition is part of a broader tourism initiative by the regional government, aiming to replicate the massive “set-jetting” success Allen achieved with Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008. The agreement requires that recognizable Madrid landmarks be prominently featured in at least 15% of the footage.

The Woody Allen Madrid Film will be co-produced by his long-standing Gravier Production and Spanish company Wanda Visión. The official contract details reveal the director’s return to Spain a country that has continued to finance his projects while U.S. funding remains difficult to secure. Allen has repeatedly stated he still feels he has “one more great film left in him.”

This decisive move to shoot in Madrid follows reports of similar attempts to secure funding in both Italy and Barcelona that ultimately fell through. With the official backing now in place, the Woody Allen Madrid Film is set to begin casting and pre-production, offering fans a fresh, European-set narrative imbued with the signature themes that have defined his eight-decade career.
